HID (High Intensity Discharge) FAQ

What is HID (XENON) Lighting?

HID stands for High-Intensity Discharge. Automotive HID lamps are commonly called "Xenon Headlights". These are the lighting systems often seen on high-end luxury cars such as Lexus, BMW, Mercedes and Audi among others. Our products allow you to convert the standard halogen bulbs to an HID (XENON) light system producing 3 times more light on the road without having to pay $2000+ at the dealer.

What does an HID Conversion Kit come with?

Each HID Conversion Kit comes with:

2 Ballasts(Bulb Computers)
2 HID Bulbs
Power wires & matting connectors
Double sided tape and zip ties for installation
Instruction Manual
Wiring Harness (Bi-Xenon Kits)

What is the right bulb size and setup for my vehicle?

There are two distinct setups for HID Lighting, single beam and Bi-Xenon. The first step to determine what HID Conversion Kit to order is to look up the bulb size on Sylvania.

If Sylvania specifies one bulb for low beam and a separate bulb for high beam, then you will need the single beam setup. 99 percent of the time, the low beam is the size you are most interested in.

If Sylvania specified one bulb for low & high beam, you have the option of choosing between a single beam HID kit and a bi-xenon HID Kit.
The following are the Bi-Xenon bulb sizes:

H4 (9003/HB2)
9007 (HB5)
9004 (HB1)
H13 (9008)

Choosing a Bi-Xenon HID Kit will provide HID Lighting for the low beam as well as instant HID Lighting for the high beam using only 1 set of HID Ballasts. Choosing a single beam HID Kit for one of the above four bulb sizes will provide HID Lighting for the low beam but eliminate use of the high beam on the vehicle. Switching the high beam in this case will cause the HID lights to turn off.

What is Low beam, Hi Beam & Fog Light?

Low Beam - Everyday driving lights
High Beam - Used to see further down the road
Fog Lights - Project light towards the ground immediately in front of the vehicle.

What does 3000K, 5000K, 6000K, 8000K, Etc mean?

These numbers refer to the color temperature of the light emitted from the bulb. Because every customer's preference varies, this is based on preference. As the number increases, the light produced will contain more color and emits less light on the road.
If your only concern is maximum amount of light on the road, we recommend the 5000K.
If you are interested in seeing a certain shade of blue or purple light you should consider 8000k, 10000k, 12000k and our HP & QP colored bulbs.
The most popular is the 6000K, producing a perfect balance of color and light output on the road. We describe it as a crystal white with a slight hint of blue.

What is K (Kelvin) and which one is right for me?

Ultrabrightlights HID Kelvin Color Chart

3000K produces a yellow colored light typically used for the fog lights.
5000K is a warm white, similar to Factory Installed HID Systems.
6000K is a cool white. Best balance of color and light output. Most popular.
8000K- 12000K will produce noticeable amounts of blue colored light.

What are Bi-Xenon HID Xenon Kits? Will it work for my car?

Bi Xenon HID Kits use one set of ballasts to produce HID Light in the low beam and hi beam of the vehicle. Bi-Xenon HID Kits can only be used in vehicles using one of the following four bulb sizes:
H4 (9003/HB2)
9007 (HB5)
9004 (HB1)
H13 (9008)

How does a Bi-Xenon HID Xenon Kit work?

Our Bi-Xenon HID Conversion Kits work by having one HID (Xenon) bulb for both, hi and low beam. The bulbs utilize a magnetic mechanism underneath the base of the bulb that instantly triggers when switching between beams inside the vehicle. These magnets are activated through a controller wiring harness allowing the bulbs to change the angle of the light without having to re-ignite or restart.

I have Sealed Beam Lamps, how do I convert to HID (Xenon)?

We offer Sealed Beam Conversion Lamps that allow use of H4/9003 bulbs. They will work with our H4 HID Bulbs and allow you to convert to HID Lighting.

What is the relay wiring harness? Do I need it?

The relay wiring harness is used for certain vehicles that have day time running lights using low beam bulbs or for older model vehicles that do not supply enough power to light the HID's consistently via the stock headlight connector. If you are frequently seeing only one light go on and having to switch the lights on and off before the second ones ignites there is a great possibility the relay wiring harness will help. Featuring inline fuses and relay it connects to the vehicles battery and provides a direct power supply for the HID's to power on at the same time, all the time.

What is a canceller kit? Do I need it?

The HID Conversion Kits that we sell are all 35W. With halogen bulbs running at 55W, certain vehicles pick up this drop in wattage and cause the HID's to strobe on and off. In this case, they require the canceller kit to allow the HID's to function properly. The Canceller kit has built in resistors and capacitors that simulate a 55W current to the vehicles computer and eliminate any error lights, strobing or flickering that might be going on.

What is the average life of an HID Xenon Kit?

This depends on the usage rate of the HID system. In general, the ballasts tend to last upward of 5 years and bulbs require replacement after 3 years. Please pay close attention to the warranty periods of our items as it will cover any bulbs or ballasts that might go out in that time period.
